FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a neurotoxin and how does it work?

Neurotoxin is an injectable treatment that relaxes targeted muscles by blocking the nerve signals that cause them to contract. This softens lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements, such as frowning or squinting.

What’s the difference between Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Nuceiva®?

All are Health Canada–approved neurotoxins with the same active ingredient but slightly different formulas. They work in the same way but may vary in how quickly they take effect, how they spread, and how long results last.

What areas can be treated with neurotoxin?

Common areas include frown lines (between the brows), forehead lines, and crow’s feet (around the eyes). It can also treat less common concerns like gummy smile, chin dimpling, jawline slimming, neck bands, and excessive sweating.

Is it safe?

When performed by a trained medical professional, neurotoxin treatments are considered very safe. Side effects are generally minimal and temporary.

How many units will I need?

It varies depending on your muscle strength, anatomy, and desired results. Your provider will recommend the right dosage for you during your consultation.

Am I too young/old to start?

Neurotoxin can be effective at almost any age for the right candidate. Many people start in their late 20s or early 30s to help prevent lines from becoming deeply etched, but it’s never “too late” to benefit. In more mature skin, neurotoxin can still soften existing lines, lift certain areas, and refresh your overall expression, often giving a more rested, approachable look. Whether you’re looking to prevent, maintain, or restore, your treatment plan can be tailored to suit your age, skin condition, and goals.

Can I get neurotoxin while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Neurotoxin treatments are not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. There’s currently not enough research to confirm safety for the baby, so medical professionals advise waiting until after this period. If you’re hoping to maintain your results, we can explore safe, non-injectable skin treatments during this time and create a personalized plan to restart your neurotoxin once it’s safe.

How long will my results last?

Typically 3–4 months, although results may last longer or shorter depending on individual factors.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe the sensation as a quick pinch. Treatments are fast and generally well-tolerated.

How long does the appointment take?

Usually about 30 minutes, including consultation and treatment.

Will I look frozen or unnatural?

Not if done correctly. Our goal is to soften lines while keeping your natural expressions intact.

How soon will I see results?

You may start noticing changes within 3–5 days, with full results visible at around 2 weeks.

What’s the downtime?

There is no true downtime. You can return to most normal activities immediately, though we recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, heat exposure, or lying flat for 4 hours.

What can I do before my appointment to prepare?

Avoid alcohol, blood-thinning medications, and supplements like fish oil, vitamin E, or aspirin for a few days before treatment (with your doctor’s approval) to reduce bruising risk.

What should I avoid after treatment?

Avoid rubbing or massaging the area, strenuous exercise, and excessive heat (saunas, hot yoga) for 24 hours.

Can I work out after my appointment?

We recommend waiting at least 24 hours before intense exercise.

What are the possible side effects?

Temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site are common. Rarely, headaches or mild asymmetry can occur.

Will my wrinkles get worse if I stop?

No! Your muscles will simply return to their natural movement, and lines will gradually return to how they were before treatment.
